All you need to do is have photos/videos in your phone's internal memory or on your SD card, and click the button to the right of the timeline in the center of the screen.

Yes, a photo-to-video conversion process will take place when you import your photo.

Yes, to limit the risk of anomalies, X-STORY is limited to 5 minutes.

Yes, any changes you make are saved directly by the application.

It's perfectly possible to start an edit and then quit the application to finish it later*.

*The only exception is when sharing media from Google Photos. You will be prompted to export the X-STORY before exiting the application.
