The IP Standard: Protection Against Dust and Water
The level of smartphone resistance to water and dust is measured by an international standard: the IP standard (Ingress Protection) defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission. This measurement will help you make your choice based on the desired level of resistance.
The IP standard consists of two digits: the first indicating the level of protection against dust (from 0 to 6) and the second specifying the level of water resistance (from 0 to 9). Thus, the corresponding rating indicates the degree of protection of the device against the penetration of foreign solid objects and water with harmful effects.
The IK rating: protection against impacts
The IK standard (International Mechanical Protection) is defined by the French standard NF EN 62262. It measures, in turn, the level of shock resistance of phones. The device is then tested to withstand external mechanical impacts.
This rating is presented as numbers (from 0 to 10) indicating the level of protection of the device's casing against shocks.

The MIL-STD-810H Military Standard: Protection in Extreme Conditions
The military standard MIL-STD-810H, created by the US Army, measures the toughness and durability of the rugged phone through several laboratory tests simulating extreme, hostile, and dangerous conditions that the smartphone may face in daily use:
- Thermal shocks over a short duration
- Exposure to high and low temperatures over a long period
- Exposure to severe weather conditions (rain, salt fog, humidity…) over a long duration
