WHO ARE WE?

Crosscall, creator of sustainable mobile phones, offers waterproof, durable mobile phones and smartphones with long battery life. The company was founded in 2009 by Cyril Vidal to meet specific needs and uses that he himself encountered and for which no specific equipment existed. The brand designs models that are perfectly suited to the harsh and unpredictable environments encountered by athletes and professionals in the field (water, rain, wind, humidity, dust, shocks, etc.), as well as a range of high-performance accessories. With more than 4.5 million units sold, a turnover of €114 million and already benefiting from more than 20,000 points of sale, the French company, based in Aix-en-Provence, continues to evolve by moving upmarket with its mobile phones, which are increasingly recognized for their quality and originality in France and internationally. 

A BRAND BORN ON A STORMY DAY

I always wanted Crosscall to be a collective adventure. I believe that's what it has been, what it is, and what it will always be. I remember a stormy day more than 12 years ago during one of my trips out to sea. I found myself caught in a sudden and violent squall, and the salt water ended up putting my cell phone out of commission. 

Individual boats usually don't have radio equipment, so when our cell phone is out of service, we find ourselves cut off from the world with no way to signal our position or call for help. It's the kind of stressful situation we'd like to avoid. Luckily, I eventually made it back to dry land. Standing on the shore, soaked to the skin, I had only one thing on my mind: designing mobile phones that could withstand the harshest environments, meet people's needs, and stand out for their durability. I didn't know it yet, but Crosscall had just been born!

A CHALLENGE TO BE TAKEN UP

The current economic system is such that entrepreneurship is not easy. The first few times I ventured to talk about my plan to create a brand of phones, some people smiled at the idea that I was seriously considering challenging the multinationals that were already fighting for monopoly. Furthermore, convincing phone manufacturers and users that having more durable and resistant products makes a real difference in everyday life did not happen overnight. But where there's a will, there's a way. 

Over the years, women and men from diverse backgrounds and educational backgrounds have joined our project. Gradually, a close-knit team with the skills to meet the challenge has formed around Crosscall. We began by creating our own industrial model and laying the foundations for an original technology. Step by step, year after year, we have established ourselves as a credible alternative to the major operators and distributors. 

SUSTAINABILITY, OUR COMMITMENT

While this wasn't the case when we started out, in today's world, designing more sustainable and responsible products has become a matter of course and will likely be a requirement in the future. Times are changing, and we can only welcome that. But let's not fool ourselves: this necessarily requires a new vision of telephony. 

It is a question of definitively rejecting a model based on technological one-upmanship in order to prioritize the needs of our users and take into account all stakeholders in our value chain. This is not only what sets us apart, but also what drives our commitment. 

Thinking differently has been the key to our success and led to rapid growth. So much so that we have had to move our headquarters four times to accommodate new employees. Since the launch of our first devices, we have sold more than 3 million units and now operate in 16 countries. Although Crosscall's initial mission was to make sustainability accessible to the general public, we are also very proud to have been chosen by the SNCF, the police, the gendarmerie, and hospitals to equip their staff in conditions that place heavy demands on equipment. 

Crosscall has now become a medium-sized company (ETI) with almost 200 employees. It has raised several rounds of funding while ensuring that its capital remains 100% French and that its employees are stakeholders. True to our DNA, we recently decided to offer a 5-year hardware warranty on Generation 5 products, a unique warranty in the telephony sector. In line with new regulations that require manufacturers to display the repairability level of their products, not only have our latest models obtained the highest ratings on the market, but we are also committed to ensuring that their components remain available for 10 years. 

THE FUTURE IS BEING PREPARED NOW, THANKS TO YOU

We have also developed a prototyping laboratory at our headquarters in Aix-en-Provence, which will enable us to further improve the sustainability of our smartphones and make progress in their eco-design. Finally, the next step we have set ourselves is to establish a dedicated local reconditioning facility that will give our products a second life. Even though social and environmental performance has now become a major issue across all sectors, Crosscall remains an exception and one of the few human-scale companies in the global telecommunications landscape. We have come a long way since that stormy day, but there is still much to be done.
