ACTION-X3, a smartphone satisfying military standards

   -   February 12, 2018

The MIL-STD-810G military standards were created by the US Army test laboratory for equipment to be developed. These standards involve some twenty tests to be performed in a laboratory where the purpose is to re-create extreme, hostile and dangerous conditions that may occur in a real professional environment. To ensure ACTION-X3 compliance with these standards our teams selected a set of 11 tests reflecting situations that users are likely to experience while using their smartphone. Here’s an explanation by CROSSCALL.

RESISTANCE TO EXTREME TEMPERATURES

1. TEMPERATURE SHOCK

The ACTION-X3 can pass from -40°C to +60°C in less than a minute (repeated 3 consecutive times).

2. HIGH TEMPERATURE

When stabilised at a temperature of 60°C for over 4 hours, the ACTION-X3 won’t show any sign of surface deterioration. Its functional use (calls, sms’s…) is guaranteed at 55°C for 2 hours.

3. LOW TEMPERATURE

When stabilised at a temperature of -40°C for 4 hours, the ACTION-X3 won’t show any sign of surface deterioration. Its functional use (calls, sms’s…) is guaranteed at -25°C for 2 hours.

FLUID RESISTANCE

4. RAIN

The ACTION-X3 is exposed to harsh weather conditions for 30 minutes on each one of its 6 faces i.e. 3 hours of harsh conditions (a flow of 10cm/hr i.e. droplets of up to a 4.5-mm diameter with bursts of 65 km/hr).

5. SALT FOG

A sodium chloride solution (5%, neutral pH) is sprayed on the ACTION-X3. Spraying and drying are then alternated in cycles of 24 hours for 4 days in very warm conditions (temperature of 35°C).

6. CONTAMINATING FLUIDS

A solvent (2-propanol) is sprayed for 24 hours.

RESISTANCE TO MOTION

7. VIBRATION

The ACTION-X3 undergoes prolonged exposure (8 hrs) to heavy shaking on every axe (X,Y,Z).

8. SHOCK TESTING

18 shocks are performed i.e. 3 on each of the 6 faces.

9. ACCELERATION

Acceleration is performed on the ACTION-X3 along the 6 directions, passing from 0 to 72 km/hr in 1 second.

RESISTANCE TO SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS

10. RESISTANCE TO ALTITUDE (low pressure)

The ACTION-X3 is switched on for an hour in a depressurized chamber at 57kPa which corresponds to using the phone at over 4000 metres.

11. SUN (UV) RADIATION

The ACTION-X3 is exposed to conditions that correspond to spending over a week in the areas of the world that are most exposed to UV rays (using Xenon lamps to reproduce sunlight wavelengths, from ultraviolet to infrared). This test is carried out with an exposure peak of 1120W/m2 inducing a temperature with a potential to reach 49°C.

Certified = no alteration in look, materials or functional features after testing.
